Seoul Arts Center introduces Kusama Yayoi.
Kusama Yayoi and Seoul Arts Center has put together an exhibition from May 4 to June 15, 2014. Kusama Yayoi is a living legeng of the international avant-garde and presents the largest solo exhibition at Hangaram Museum on record.
This exhibition will present how ordinary subjects can become the arts and over 120 artworks including paintings, sculptures, installation, and documentary film with unique approaches will be shown. The exhibition will offer a special opportunity to show Kusama Yayoi’s most recent works in one place that have been shown in world leading museums such as Tate Modern in English, Pompidou Center in Paris, and Whitney Museum in New York. The Kusama Yayoi exhibition started in Daegu Art Museum and is planned to tour Seoul, Shanghai, Macao, Taipei, and New Delhi from 2013 to 2015.
Get to know Kusama Yayoi and her who she is to understand her work. At the age ten, she started to paint polka dots and nets as motifs and created fantastic paintings in watercolors, pastels, and oils. In 1957, she went the United States to show large paintings, soft sculptures, and environmental sculptures using mirrors and electric lights. When she returned to Japan in 1973, Kusama issued a number of novels and anthologies. In 1983, the novel “The Hustler’s Grotto of Christopher Street” won the Tenth Literary Award for New Writers from monthly magazine Yasei Jidai. This is just the beginning of Kusama Yayoi’s history.
